Roll Stabilization System Refit

A roll fin system has heavy and continuous operation when in service which can cause wear on bearings and actuators. In addition, the control system may have problems in maintenance due to unavailable or costly spare parts. Also the older control systems are not as effective as newer and more sophisticated controls and may require replacement.

With Autonav’s many years in design, manufacture and service of steering systems, we are in a good position to upgrade or repair the similar actuators used in roll fin stabilization. We can survey the installation with the customer, monitor the operation and determine which parts should be repaired or replaced. Autonav works closely with the National Research Council of Canada from which we obtain the most up to date and effective control algorithms which can replace older and less effective controls. Colour LCD touchscreen displays allow control and monitoring of all operating parameters and record the results of ongoing operation and adjustments.

Rudder Roll Stabilization (RRS) is an option which eliminates the roll fins completely and allows roll control with a modified steering system. Autonav can provide an analysis of the suitability of RRS for any particular application. RRS has the further advantage of eliminating Cross Axis Coupling, a problem in which steering causes roll and roll correction pulls the vessel of course. The control algorithms of RRS prevent this mutual interaction which is inherent in any system with separate steering and roll control machinery.
